Hyaluronic acid plays an important role, particularly in medical-surgical areas. Hyaluronic acid is used as lubrication of ligaments and joints, also believed to prevent bacterial infections. The therapeutic effect of hyaluronic acid is highly related to its molecular weight and its distribution; a longer therapeutic effect is expected from the larger molecular weight compounds.

Figure 1 shows the molecular weight and elution volume of three different kinds of hyaluronic acids having molecular weight distribution between 200,000 to 2,000,000 Da. In figure 2, molecular weight is plotted in x-axis, showing the molecular weight distribution differences of those three hyaluronic acid samples.
